Bryan Johnson and MITOVIT: altitude training from an armchair

Bryan Johnson continues to explore MITOVIT as part of his work on longevity. He is now sharing his IHHT protocol: five minutes with low oxygen followed by three minutes with high oxygen. After promising observations from the first round, he wants to test it again – and monitor more health markers.

Bryan Johnson uses MITOVIT with a breathing mask

Getting a dose of simulated altitude training while sitting comfortably in an armchair may sound unexpected. But that is precisely the possibility that makes MITOVIT interesting.

Bryan Johnson opens his latest review with an analogy about climbing Africa's highest mountain without leaving the chair. Behind the wording is a specific protocol: alternating between oxygen-poor and oxygen-rich air to give the body a controlled physiological stimulus.

We have previously written about Bryan Johnson's interest in MITOVIT and longevity. This time, it is about the next step: how he uses the technology and what he wants to find out.

Five minutes with low oxygen. Three minutes with high oxygen.

Bryan's protocol is based on two recurring phases:

  • 5 minutes of hypoxia: oxygen-poor breathing air, with an oxygen concentration as low as 9 per cent.
  • 3 minutes of hyperoxia: oxygen-rich breathing air, with an oxygen concentration of 30 per cent.

Normal air contains approximately 21 per cent oxygen. The mask therefore changes the oxygen concentration in the air he breathes while he remains seated.

This is the basis of IHHT, Intermittent Hypoxic-Hyperoxic Training. The oxygen-poor phase provides the stimulus, followed by a recovery phase with a higher oxygen concentration.

MITOVIT monitors the user's oxygen saturation and, in biofeedback mode, can adjust the oxygen concentration according to the body's response. A well-considered protocol therefore involves more than minutes and percentages. Bryan's settings are his own; each user's individual circumstances need to guide the session.

Promising observations raise new questions

After the first round, Bryan describes promising changes in areas including blood glucose regulation and fertility markers.

He and his team are now repeating the protocol. They want to investigate whether the observations recur while also broadening the follow-up to include more markers.

What captures our interest is the curiosity behind the work. A positive change becomes the starting point for the next question: can it be repeated, and what else can we learn?

His observations are personal and preliminary. They do not in themselves show that IHHT caused the changes or that other users will achieve the same results.

A place in the health routine

Despite his strong interest in advanced health technology, Bryan emphasises the fundamentals: regular sleep, good training and a positive mindset.

MITOVIT has a place within that overall approach. The session can be carried out while sitting or lying down, allowing hypoxic training to fit into a routine without adding another physical workout.

For gyms, clinics and health centres, this opens up an interesting opportunity: to complement their services with individually tailored hypoxic training, guidance and follow-up over time.

Explore MITOVIT for your business

Bryan's use makes IHHT tangible. Behind the interest in longevity is a clear protocol, measurements and a desire to better understand the body's response.
